The axle shaft is
retained by the brake backing plate and seal retainer. The end play is adjusted
with shims between the axle housing and the backing plate. The bearing should
be a reasonably tight fit but not to the point of being a press fit. The other
things that affect axle shaft end play are, are the correct length shafts
installed and is the thrust block in the differential case in good shape. Please
do not weld in the axle shaft bearings, it makes it a real bitc_
for the next guy to disassemble! I
hope this helps. Ernie and the Black Bitc_!! -----Original Message----- Looking
for some advice, I'm going over the rear axle on the coupe, I have excessive
axle end play. The bearing race for the outer axle bearing should be a tight
press fit. I can quite easily tap it in and out of it's seat. This is all that
keeps the rear axle from walking out of the housing. Has anyone run into this
on their tapered axles? As far as I can see all I have for an alternative is
knurl the seat of the race or weld it in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
