That same "someone else" hastens to point out, this was in the early to mid
50s, when things were much different regarding speeds and economic
conditions. Recaps were not that unusual, we had a very good business going
making them. I used them myself in my college days, when I had to make do on
$26 a week for EVERYTHING!

wouldn't even dream of buying recaps, but I'm sure many on a budget do this.
