A ballast resistor's main function is to limit the current going into the coil. It only takes about 6 amps on most iginition systems to generate a good spark. Anything beyond that will just waste energy ( the fuel / air mixture in the cylinder is not going to burn any more completely with a hotter spark. At that point, you are at the mercy of the heads and how they are designed.. ), generate a lot of heat at the coil, and put more wear burden on the points. On an electronic ignition module, the power transistor will get hotter and derate.
