My '67 Convertible just developed a strange problem. It has run fine, absolutely wonderful, for days.

Sounds like a stuck choke to me. Pull the lid off the air cleaner and make sure the choke is all the way open. The linkage and rod that goes through the body of the carb can get gunked up and stick.
