IML: Old vs. new style alternators

I see our master technicians' reference tells us the old style alternator
can not be combined with the newer electronic voltage regulator. Looking
at the pictures at
http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Lit/Master/256/page11.htm I think I have
an insulated brush alternator (new style) and I definitely have a shiny,
new old style regulator. There is no photo in the guide of an old style
alternator. Is there a visual clue that will confirm whether I have an old
or new style alternator?

Thanks,

David
