IML: New vs old style alternators again

Okay, still not quite there on the alternator thing.

This alternator has two connectors -- a black wire to an eye that goes over
a post labeled "BAT" and a green wire to a push-on blade connector labeled
"FLD". Neither of these wires leads to a ground on the alternator case.
The diode pattern looks just like the photo of the new style alternator in
the master technician's reference guide.

So it meets some of the criteria people have told me for "old" -- 2 wires
-- but looks like the new one and is not grounded to the alternator frame.
Both connectors go into a cluster of wires that leads straight back to the
firewall and across to the bulkhead connector and the voltage regulator.
I'm sooooo confused.

Thanks,

David

The easiest way is to look at the back of the alternator at the diodes, the

newer ( 72 and later ) have a rectangular or squared off area that the
diodes are built into. The older ones are rounded, you can see 3 of the
diodes pressed into one part of the alternator and it resembles a 3 leaf
clover as you look directly at it. ( Not the best visualization but once
you see them together its unmistakeable.) Another way is to notice that
one
brush lead is attached directly to the alternator frame and the other brush

has the field wire. The newer ones have two field leads.

Btw, the 100 amp unit is not included in this discussion, though it is very

similar to the newer style.
