The first application of the hemi chamber to a passenger-car engine was an
adaptation to an in-line six set up as a prototype although a
single-cylinder lab engine was used to test out many types of chambers,
including the hemi. Ray White, William Drinkard, and Mel Carpentier were
among the principals. Long-standing ideas that the hemi might not be
suitable for mass-auto use had to be put to rest due to the risks.
Of course, aircraft engines, racing engines were there earlier. Apparently,
Chrysler's engineering folks actually tested all configurations and in the
end, it was the redoubtable Kaufman Thuma Keller who approved the program
despite internal resistance.

Ahhh, as typical, the defense industry sparks technology... and I would
love to have the gas cap eagle if no one else has come up with the answer.
