IML: 727 Transmission Rebuild $$$

There is a large difference between having a Cast Iron Torque-flite and the
Aluminum version, perhaps 1963 forward, although the '62 was aluminum, it
was still the old style...I think, but I had my '63 rebuilt in '95 for
$800.000, but in '97 it cost more than $2,000.00 to rebuild the Cast Iron TF
in my '60 'vert. The earlier ones had a rear pump as well so could, in
theory, be push started, but I never had much success in pushing a 5,500 lb
car up to 20 mph before pushing it into first! A hill (heading down said
hill) would probably do it, but not from a dead stop on flat land. Any
modern car attempting to be a "Good Samaritan" in pushing you, would end up
with $$$ in damage to their car, and you only about 6 feet further than you
were! LOL!

That was my own experience anyway. Others may have different ones. Good
luck!

I recently got quoted $3000 to rebuild my 59 crown's transmission. Is
there that much of a variance in the years?

3 weeks ago I paid $974.00 to have the transmission in my '68
Convertible rebuilt. I am sure that the range would be from around
$400.00 to $1,200 depending on the shop, and what is wrong with your
car. Mine was operating flawlessly, but leaked like a sivve. I bought an
external seal kit, and planned to install it myself, but reconsidered
since the car is over 35 years old, and according to all "PO's" had the
original, un-rebuilt automatic transmission. The shop discovered some
potential problems that would have gotten me later, so I think the
decision to "have it done right" was a good one.
