IML: Gas tank refurbing

Hey all. My mechanic has dropped my tank and sent it in for
reconditioning. It had a bunch of sediment in the bottom, as well as
a crappy patch job on the underside that started to leak again. He
also says that my fuel sending unit needs replaced.
I purchased the recommended F*rd replacment float, but he says the
float is fine. So I have two questions:
1. Is it possible he is wrong? He is an excellent mechanic with some
Mopar experience, but we all miss things.
2. If it does need replaced, is there an alternative I can use from
another year/model/make? Or does someone have one that works? This
car is gearing up to be my daily driver, so pristine show machine is
not what I'm shooting for. Budget is a big consideration for me.
BTW, its a 1966 Imperial Crown Coupe.
Thanks!
