Re: IML: Hooking up New Deck In a 1990

The problem with weak sound may be from using an aftermarket deck with the rest of the Infinity system. I used to have a 90 5th Ave that didn't have the Infinity system in it. The salesman told me they could install one & charged me quite a bit. Come to find out, this is not possible if the car wasn't built that way with the proper wiring harness. Basically, I got ripped off & they had only installed the head unit. I filed a complaint with consumer protection & won the case.
The dealer let me take my car to a shop of my choosing & have an aftermarket amp & good speakers installed at their expense.
To get to the point I'm trying to make is that the shop found out after frying one channel of the Infinity deck is that they put out FAR more current then a typical deck. He wasn't referring to the number of watts it put out,but the current. As I recall, he said nearly 3X as much. This caused them a big headache trying to get this system to work properly. With the amp turned up & the turn signal on, you would get a thumping out of the subwoofer that sounded like Pink Floyd. They told me that the best thing to do was to get a more mainstream deck & my problems would end.

Ryan S sent the following:

==========================================

I had posted here a while ago about putting my new deck into my 1990
Imperial.

So I found that each sub has its own amp, so there is 8 speakers (4
tweeters
and 4 subs), all factory equipment except the deck. Now there is one
wire,
"AMP" i assume it gives power to all the amps. OK, i hooked it up today,
and
when I use the radio the subs work, BUT when i try and play a CD, nothing

happens.......

How can I get the one wire to work?? This wire SHOULD go to the 'remote
lead' wire on the deck, and I put it there, but I get nothing. So how do
I
go about getting sound to the subs?
=======================================

Ryan, I did the same thing for my son's Concorde and my Intrepid.
Here's what I did (we have Kenwood stereos).

The BLUE wire is for a remote antenna but it is not used.

The BLUE/WHITE TRACER wire is for the power amps.

If you use the antenna wire, there is not enough juice to power
the amps and they might not work at all, or they will be weak
and keep cutting out..

(I am assuming you are hooking up to the factory INFINITY stereo
speakers?)

Sounds fantastic when hooked up correctly. (And I can play .mp3's,
WMA's and CD's . . . .)
