The idler arm is the RH pivot point of the parallelogram steering linkage. The pitman arm out of the steering box forms the LH pivot point. A loose idler arm (or more accurately, idler arm bushing) can cause sloppy, loose steering even if every other component in the system is brand new and tight. It should be a relatively inexpensive repair. Most Imperials with more than 40K miles on the clock would benefit from a new one (or new bushing).
