The built in limiter is a set of breaker points. They get stuck, and burn out three gauges (not AMPS). The coils are the windings for the gauge. Even if they look burned, they will usually work good enough to use. They can be rebuilt and re-calibrated. Sounds like you bought a cluster that has that already. I would still bypass the original limiter with the replacement. The original one was prone to failure.

Is the one built in to the gauge a coiled peice of wire paul ? sorry for all the questions but my mechanic suspected it was.
