Jerry;
Sometimes you can end up with a raw gas smell if
someone has fiddled with the vapour recovery system on a 70's car. There are all
kinds of pipes and tubing for this purpose running between the gas tank,
carburettor, and a charcoal canister on the right side behind the radiator
support. Check the shop manual to see where everything goes and see if any
tubing is missing or split.
The only unique problem with thermoquads over other
carbs is that sometimes the base warps from heat allowing air to leak through
but even that can be fixed. They are still available through NAPA as rebuilds if
you don't want to play with rebuilding one yourself.
