Re: IML: Gauges

From the original cluster, it is easy to tell which terminal was the output from the limiter. This is because there is a jumper from it to the other two gauges. Since the original limiter is in the Temperature gauge, the output and the input terminals are located behind it.

Once the new limiter is mounted to the back of the cluster (the mounting tab usually acts as the ground) just move the power wire from the Temperature gauge to the new limiter, and make a jumper for all three gauges from the output terminal of the new part. This is a very simple installation.

Yes, it is a very simple substitution, however you do have to get into the
location of the old regulator to disconnect it, so that any problems it has
won't affect the operation of the new one.

These are all 3 terminal devices, with a 12 volt terminal, a ground terminal
(often just the case ground) and an output terminal, which has the so called
"5 volts" on it. I say 'so called', because as most of us know, this is
really an alternating 12 volts/0 volts signal which has an on/off cycle
regulated to produce 5 volts on average.

Since these gauges are all operated by heating an element, the slowing
effect of the heating smoothes out the operation of the gauge so that the
pulsation is barely noticeable.

The only reason I mention this is that if you put a test light or a meter on
the output of the regulator, you will see the voltage alternating, about
once per second, between 12 and 0 volts. This is the normal situation, not
a problem.

Dick, John,

I've replaced external regulators, like the NAPA part, but have not yet gone
into a cluster with an internal limiter. Is this relatively straightforward
once you get there? I will need to repair or modify to external at least
four instrument clusters with internal limiters, and haven't found detailed
information on this. I have not checked the archives, but didn't want to
miss a chance at more detail.

Thanks,

Michael
