Well, you said that when it runs, it is very rich. Rich running is not usually an ignition problem.

If you are sure that the choke is functional and the air filter is clean, you could be experiencing stuck floats. The reason I say this is that you mentioned the "brisk acceleration". This happened to me once when I floored the accelerator in one of my cars, and then the engine died. Getting it started again was difficult, and then it ran crappy and rich. I didn't have a clue what might have happened, but for some reason decided to tap on the side of the carb with the handle of a screw driver. The car smoothed out almost immediately. This can happen to a car that isn't driven enough, and/or has been sitting for a while.

I was also going to suggest the possibility of misdiagnosing the rich condition, and dirt in the fuel line. You pretty much eliminated that when you disconnected the line from the carb and cranked the engine. Although if you disconnected ahead of the fuel filter, it may be plugged. Again, that would not lead to a rich running condition.

Just couple more ideas from afar.

Thanks to everbody for your sage advice.  a couple of
things:  The car initially died shortly after I
accelerated briskly up to 70 or so.  It died at the
top of a small hill.  Since I have only logged about
200 miles on the car,  I did not know if the gas gauge
was incorrect, and tried the pour-fuel-in-carb trick
to see if it was a fuel supply problem.  This did not
work.  It seemed ignition related, and I was without
tools. I have always put in the premium fuel in the
car and had added a can of Lead Substitute recently. I
also pulled the fuel line off of  the carb and cranked
the engine and it filled my glass jar very quickly. My
neighbor with a Studebaker thinks it is that
new-fangled e lectronic eggnition.  I will try
anyting,
