If you disconnect the primary wires on a coil, it cannot hurt anything, but if you disconnect the secondary wire (the high voltage wire), be sure to ground it to the engine ground securely. If it is just left waving in the breeze, it will arc to anything in the neighborhood that is within ½ inch or so, and/or cause a carbon track to form down the coil tower.

This is cautioned against in the later car service manuals ? but if one has converted an earlier car to electronic ignition, there is no such warning in your car?s manuals.

I don't have a Pertronix igintion system, but I have disconnected the coil on other more modern cars w/electronic ignition to give them a few cranks before starting. Never caused a problem for me...

Thanks for great idea about priming the engine with oil after been sitting

for a long time (for e.g. in the winter).

Is it safe btw, to disconnect the coil if the car is equipped with a

Pertronix elecronic ignition?

I too follow the words of wisdom from Dick that it is important to warm up

the engine thoroughly. I have here the same situation as you have at your

place, a quick jaunt out to the freeway is very easy to do for me:)

Fouled spark plugs, maybe thanks to the Pertronix ignition and the new

Edelbrock carb isn't an issue here !

Btw, I am using NGK XR 4 spark plugs and I am very happy with them!
