Re: IML: How much Marvel?

Hi Chris.....yeah, I guess you're right, 50K certainly isn't a NEW motor. Actually, I don't know what amount of miles were on the Imperial when the motor was replaced with a rebuilt, slightly-cam'd 1971 Imperial motor. Two owners before me did that work. I have only about 600 miles on it since this past Thanksgiving weekend when I drove the car from San Fran to here in Beaumont, CA. The previous owner has the car for about 5 years so its probably less than 50K but almost certainly was well broken in by the guy I bought it from (he likes to go 100+ in the car whenever he could!).
I remember Rizlone also fram back when I was LOTS younger! Never thought about using it in the Imperial though. If I remember right, someone told me long time back that the 'active' ingredient in Marvel oil was kerosene, which, (if true) would make sense since it cleans motors/parts/etc so well!
Good point about using the MMO in the gas tank BUT making sure to change the fuel filter not long afterwards. I am going to do just that!
(wonder how much that old Rizlone thermometer would go for if you put it on EBAY, these days???...thought if its from your Dad i am sure you will have it for a longgggggggg time yet!!)
...by the way, do yu know if you can ( if you SHOULD!!) add MMO if you are using synthetic oil in the motor???
...thanks again for the reply!!

Hi Dan,

While I'm a Rislone guy (one quart per oil change...my grandfather used it,
my old-timer mechanic endorsed it, and I even have my pop's big old Rislone
display thermometer from his garage hanging in my house...scientific, no?!),
I'm not anti-Marvel. Doesn't it say on the container how much to add to oil,
fuel, etc.?

By the way, did you say 50,000? Fifty? That's not a recent rebuild unless
you drive the Space Shuttle. That's a fully broken-in engine, even ready for
high-mileage oil again though it's in the prime of its life.

You can use MMO at every oil change in the crankcase, and on occasional
fill-ups at the gas station. If you haven't put an additive in the fuel for
a while, I'd consider replacing the fuel filter one tankful later, since any
additive tends to de-gunk the fuel tank and lines, and all that stuff will
(hopefully) end up in the filter...
