Re: IML: belt squeal

Try a little abrasive cleaner sprinkled on the belts.  Something like comet.  Once you do this, you have to repeat it every now and again because it polishes up the pulley nicely.

Subject: IML: belt squeal

need some help.    On my 75 Imp Coupe with CA. Emission the belt for the power steering and water pump squeals under heavy acceleration. I have a new steering pump, new belt on the car. On this car the steering pump is up top on the driver side, and the pollution air pump is below. The air pump is locked up and has no belt on it. I have the steering pump belt very tight, and it still squeal.   What I am thinking  is that with the steering pump up top this changers the amount of belt on the water pump pulley and lets it slip.
dose this sound correct and if so can I move the steering pump down to the place the air pump is?  I have looked at my 75 4door and can't tell how the steering pump is mounted. Or will I need to replace the air pump and put the belt back on, this will then have 2 belts driving the water pump.
Or is something I have not found making the belt squeal?
