I had forgotten that. I've seen that on a different brand (Cad***ac).
The service manual to the other car said the inside of the yoke should
be packed with wheel bearing grease. That's supposed to keep the ATF
from leaking thru that plug/hole/breather/whatever. I don't believe
this car had a plug.
The purpose of that small hole is so that a suction is not created. As
you drive and the drivetrain flexes, the yoke slides back and forth on
the tailshaft, making the driveshaft shorter/longer as terrain dictates.
Having this hole at the back of the yoke (by the U-joint) prevents it
from creating a vacuum / building pressure as it performs this sliding
motion.
Good call, Geoff. I'd bet dollars to donuts that's the problem in this
case.

I had a similar problem with my 70 valiant hardtop, had a 904
that
would not respond to new seals. Turned out that the internal bore of the
universal front section has a frost type plug which is just hammered in
and
is not entirely leakproof.Dont know if a 66 is the same and you really
have
to pull the driveshaft and seperate the joint to check it. regards
