Re: IML: Why choose Imperial over Caddy or Lincoln?

Ah, what a great question! Provocative, to be sure.

As someone who grew up in the 60's, I think the answer is complex. Both Cadillac and Lincoln made some great cars. To be absolutely fair, I don't know if any of these cars (Cadillac, Imperial, or Lincoln) was "best" in a purely objective sense. I think all were great in their own different ways.

I think I was drawn to Imperial because it was so different from the other two. The styling was unique, and to my mind, better than the competition's. And the interiors were also nicer. I remember being inside my parents' Cadillacs when I was a child and thinking how big they were. Yet when I see these interiors today I am surprised at how small they really were. The Imperials, however, remain as big today as they were then, if that makes any sense.

All of America's luxury cars from the 50's and 60's were the best this country could produce, in my opinion. But Imperial consistently struck out on its own and tried to define itself in a way that was unique and unlike the competition. This was both its greatest asset and also its doom, in my opinion.
