The causes of fire being explored leads one to the next
step: PUTTING THEM OUT! Buy a fire extinguisher for your car and have it
handy. I have them in my daily drivers and my vintage car, this after
nearly losing a '62 Chevrolet when I was younger and slightly dumber than I am
today. Having one can mean the difference between a minimally frightening
experience and the loss of your investment, not to mention your
health.
My secretary's 17 year-old son recently bought a '54
chevrolet pickup to restore. I bought him a fire extinguisher and an air
compressor and sent them home with her. I could tell she thought the fire
extinguisher was overkill, especially when she told me "He might not need this,
because that ol'truck will never leave the carport." Not long afterward he
was welding in a new floor under the passenger footwell when something
inside the cab ingnited. The extinguisher I had gaven him was in the
bed of the truck, nearly forgotten. The boy started to holler and his
father came outside in time to see flames shooting out of the passenger window
and the boy runing out from the carport. The dad grabbed the extinguisher
and put the fire out in about 20 seconds.
Needless to say, within a few minutes they
had pushed the truck out of the carport and away from the house.
There is sits to this day, I'm told.
Anyway, the story reminded me of the importance of fire
extinguishers. The next day I ran around the driveway at home and
checked our cars and couldn't locate two of the extinguishers. I
went out that very minute and replaced the both.
