The transportation cost sounds VERY reasonable from that distance. I
live in Chicago and have seen prices for shipping at about $1.00 per mile.
As for the car, do you have pics of it? If we're talking a lot of
surface rust with very little rust through, and NO rust through in the trunk and
floorboards, a serviceable interior for the short term, and the car is
complete (i.e. door panels, glass, chrome, stainless, emblems, trim), but in
need of cosmetic and mechanical TLC, it could be worth your while. There
was a 1956 cherry on E-Bay that was close to $15,000.00 in bidding and did not
sell because the reserve was not met. If the car looked like if I touched
it, it would dissolve, then it's probably really only good for parts and would
try to get it for less than $1,000.00.
It also depends on your intentions. If it's a resto project and looks
like it can be like the Sphinx and rise from the ashes and become a good show
car or a nice driver and could be done at a reasonable cost, then I'd go for
it. I live in Chicago and am not sure about salvage titles, but I'd
definitely check that out if you wanted to plate it to drive it. I just
won an auction on E-Bay for 1965 Crown hardtop and made sure it was a clear
title and not a salvage.
