No Robin, the pan doesn't have to come off..Just put a helicoil in it that is slightly bigger (next size) the plug, it is easy, strong and reliable.

Any brilliant ideas on a quick fix for a stripped oil pan drain? I changed oil yesterday and the plug felt weird going in and would not tighten.It now just turns with a wrench but seems to be holding although there is a small leak.
