The color of the cable is irrelevant. They are often replaced with red cables where they should be black and black where they should be red.

The cable that goes to the positive side on the 1965 Imperial runs to the relay mounted on the fender well, as stated below. The ground, or negative terminal goes to the engine block.

To avoid confusion in the future and possible damage during an incorrect jump, the negative cable should be changed to/painted black and positive have same done in red.

Something sounds wrong there. The positive cable should go from the battery to the starter relay & finally, to the starter.

The Imperial was starting and running with zero problems. The real issue, at 
 
 
I'm surprised the red one ends up under the a/c. The negative cable >
(usually black) is terminated somewhere around the a/c compressor. It > hooks directly to the engine. Is this cable connected to the negative > terminal on the battery? 
 
Couple o' questions.. 
Do you have a Voltage meter or test light? 
Is everything in the car dead or just the starting circuit?
