Re: IML: '60 Imperial Power Brake Boosters (and things that go bump in the night)

I tend to stay awy from W-40 except to clean things. It doesn't serve as a particularly good lubricant. For this, I think you are correct about using something that is silicone based. For the inside of the doors on the '62, I suggest you should use actual penertating oil from a spray can.

I still think the best route is to remove the booster from the parts car and have it rebuilt to replace the one on the '60. Then you will have a spare, that I think you will eventually need anyway.

Subject: IML: '60 Imperial Power Brake Boosters (and things that go bump in the night)

Hi Boys and Girls,

Went out to the "Rust Farm" today to prep the '62 for its journey back to Portland (hopefully Monday).  While I was out there I pulled the Vacuum Booster off one of the '61s to take a good look at what ails me.  Once I got it off, I noticed the little white button inside the yoke that moves out when pressure is applied to the brake pedal.  It looks like this is the item that tells the booster to get with the program.  Once I got back home I crawled under the dash of my '60 with the non boosting booster to check out the action of its white button.  Simply put, there isn't any action.  The button is stuck in the closed(?) possition so as far as the booster is concerned, nothing is happening with the brakes at all.  I gave it a shot of good 'ol WD-40 but there wasn't much left in the can after lubing things on the '62.  Perhaps it's just as well as I probably should use a silicon based lube rather than a solvent on parts with a rubber seal like that button.  I figure I have nothing to lose so why not see what happens.

If anyone can suggest a product that might help free this thing up I'd apprectiate it.

Happy Memorial Day to you all!!!!
