IML: Front end suspension height '60 Imperial

I forgot to mention that the measurements shown in the factory service 
manual refer to the difference between the measurement from the bottom 
of the lower ball joint flat surface and the bottom of one of the lower 
front control arm bushings.  It is not necessary to have the special 
tools shown in the service manual.  Just subtract the smaller 
measurement from the larger measurement.

Before beginning the measurements, check tire pressure and have all 
tires at the same pressure.  Check the front spindle/bearings for 
correct play (make sure there is no excessive looseness of the bearings. 
 Examine the rubber bushings of the upper and lower control arms to 
make sure they have not deteriorated and caused suspension parts to 
settle lower than they should.  Missing rubber busing pieces can cause 
the control arms to get in a bind and not settle to correct ride height. 
 It will also put a severe strain on the steering elements when turning 
corners.

It may help to use a small bubble level with shims underneath one end 
aligned underneath the ball joint and the lower control arm bushing to 
make sure height measurements are being measured from a level surface. 
The tapered wooden shims available at lumber yards (used when installing 
new door frame assemblies in houses) are good choices because it is easy 
to make minor height adjustments by sliding them against one another. 
Once the level is perfectly level, make the measurements from the top 
side of the level.
