Re: IML: "Chrysler Imperial" Rose - Most Fragrant

I was actually making a pun about having old rusty parts cars in the yard. (mine are stored
in my parent's back field).  However, I do have old Portland roses that border the entire corner lot of my house.  It is a challenge to keep up pruning them and I'd often rather trade them for an unsightly parts car, but indeed they are quite beautiful in bloom.  Roses grow ideally here in the NW and Portland is known as the Rose City and has a rose festival.  The International Rose Test Gardens are here in PDX and they have a full bed of 1965 Chrysler Imperial Roses. They are striking en-masse.

I have always owned Chrysler Imperial roses ever since I got into gardening as a teenager.  In fact, the way I first became aware of this variety was because I was being driven to school by my father in an '82 Imperial that his sister had just purchased used.  I saw sticking out from under the seat a gardening catalog that the previous owner had left, so I picked it up to flip through.  On the back were some pictures of roses and one in particular struck me.  I looked at the name, and was surprised to find it was the same as the car I was riding in.  Not only that, but this particular Imperial coupe was a burgundy color w/ maroon interior, roughly the same as the rose in the picture.  Irony of ironies...
Since then, I have alway tried to have one of these in my collection when my living situation permitted gardening, and whenever I happen to visit a botannical garden, I head for the roses and seek out this variety.

I have a "Chrysler Imperial" rose in my garden. It is indeed a beautiful dark red flower.

This variety of rose won the 1965 James Alexander Gamble Most Frangrant Medal. It's a medium to dark red Hybrid Tea-style rose. And a beautiful one, just like the car. May end up planting some in my yard one of these days. Rex Allen Novato, CA
