Steve needs to determine whether or not the stop lights will come on
when the two wires under the Master Cylinder are joined together.
The turn signal switch on 1960 Imperial is not part of the steering
column, although I believe there is a mechanical/electrical switch in
the column that cancels it. The turn signals are activated by a lever
mounted at the far left end of the dash, next to the speedometer. At
one time, I knew more about how that system works. The part that I
know and what I remember about it now, is that it isn't anything like
what you guys are thinking.
Without being there, it is difficult to know what exactly has happened
to Steve's brake lights. If they come on when the two wires under the
Master Cylinder are joined together, then the brake light switch has
failed. They fail often. This has nothing to do with the tampering of
the temperature gauge, or turn signals.
If they don't come on when the two wires under the Master Cylinder are
joined, then there is a probably a blown fuse or some other problem
related to the wiring. I think it is possible that a problem with the
turn signal switch could cause the brake lights not to come on, but
then the turn signals would not work either. My understanding from the
posts so far is that the turn signals work fine.

Did you check the Trun signal switch lever for an abundance of
loosness, expecially back and forth, which indicate the the
switch has fallen apart in the column.

If you have power at the master cylinder then you can leave the
fuses be.... The m/s is down line from the fuse block.yes live.
surley there must be a relay or fuse box for the elec windows
and
head/tail/brake lights ???
High draw devices use circuit breakers tht reset themselves.
Brake >lights are not a high draw item.ok
Turn signals are working? If they are working then the next
place I
would suspect would be the turn signal switch.why?
re m/c - found that brake fluid is leaking from top of m/c when
brakes applied ? air in system ?
There should be a piece between the lid and master cylinder that
acts as a gasket. It is the size of the lid and has a hole in
the .
middle for the bolt to go through.gasket is in place
i shall check tommorow , gud nite all. Steve
