This is absolutely correct.Everything should be replaced at the same time including springs and keepers, and possibly even the metal brake lines. Also be sure to check the movable parts in the backing plates (the adjusters) for the correct amount of tension. They can wear causing the brakes to lose their adjustment very quickly. This usually happens in the front, and for some reason '62 seems to be more likely than other years to have this problem. If you need to replace the backing plate assemblies check with one of the vendors on the OIC. I have used Imperial Heaven.
I am continuously amazed at the number of folks who claim that "center plane brakes were never any good", while when in excellent operating condition and properly maintained (including regular adjustments), they are one of the best drum set ups out there. All parts are critical.

Now begins the task of repairing the brakes on my '62 Custom and getting it in shape to drive once more. It will be interesting to see what shape the wheel and master cylinders are in.
Joe, Don't want to nag, but, Ummm, shall I infer from reading this that you have not purchased master and wheel cylinders because you're hoping to perhaps continue to use what's there? These things aren't date-stamped and I bet they're 45 years old or indistinguishable from such, so why gamble on old parts that you need to have just right every time they are deployed? One seal failure in 9 and you're converted into an ICBM with Joe-guided targeting. Do it all. Then it's done done done. At 45 years old, it's about restoration, not maintenance.
