I think you are on the right track. I looked at the section of the '62
service manual that talks about power steering gear replacement. After
the steering wheel and turn signal switch etc. plus the lower steering
wheel column trim cover has been removed, it talks about removing the
retainer snap ring from the groove in the steering tube at the top of
the bearing. Then it says to remove the jacket tube shield to allow
access to the column tube clamp and remove the screws attaching the
steering jacket tube clamp at the instrument panel and remove the
clamp. It mentions that there is an inspection panel on Imperials. I
think this may be under the carpet. Unfortunately there is not a
complete assembly drawing or picture of the procedure they describe. It
does not show how to line up the parts for reassembly. It sounds like a
good candidate for a set of digital pictures for posterity.
