IML: 6V versus 12V Electrical Systems in Imperials

In 1956 Chrysler's automobiles converted to 12V systems.  Some of the early '40s & '50's Crown Imperials (the limousine models) had 12V systems.  I would suggest you check on the 12V generators used in the 1956 model Imperials and Chryslers and see if it would bolt up to your power steering (if so equipped).  You would have other items such as electric window lifts, radio, headlights, starter, wiper motor, power seat motor, turn signal lamps and various lamps throughout the car that would have to be changed to 12 V types.  The electrical system voltage regulator would have to be changed to a 12V type too.  It sounds extensive, and it is, but can be done.

The early Autotemp AC systems '53?-'56 had a fresh air intake at the side of the rear window and used the trunk mounted AC box with two blower motors, one for each side.  It is possible that you could find two 6V blower motors that you could use in their place and avoid converting to 12V electrical system. A 1955 Chrysler or Imperial would have 6V blowers.  Of course the 12V electrical system has a number of advantages over 6V systems.  It is an issue of benefits versus amount of money to be spent.
