Re: IML: Lead Additive

A  sure bet on hardened valve seats, would be 74-75, 3769902 , 76-78 4006452 head castings. The 73, 400-440 motor home3751213 head, may have been the first. I believe, we had no lead, and reduced lead fuels in 72-74. We still had Clark Super 100, and Sunoco 240-260 in Detroit, in 71-75. At that time we paid about $ 1.5-2.00 for 100-130 Av-gas. Now, just a bit of engine tech, since all engines have a "Design Octane Requirement" If you run a fuel with less octane than the design rating, the engine will develop 1% less HP per point of rating below design. At the same time, using a fuel that exceeds the design rating, there is no HP gain.(except higher cost). The 100LL Av Gas will give a noticeable performance improvement, and has all the octane you need. You will need to adjust timing, and carb adjustments, but it sure is fun to see what happens.Keep in mind, unless you have a really fresh, or otherwise GOOD engine, the real benefits will be lost, and all this disc ussion is for naught. Ya'll have a nice day, Dave.
