Re: IML: 'Floating Power'

You have certainly a point here!
It is a lot easier to check the condition of the mount without those heat shields. But since they are called " heat" shields don't you think they suffer more from heat then oil spillage? Maybe it is wise to install some home-made shields when I install my new mounts then. As said before, the mounts do have some pretty severe cracks but are not totally broken yet..

Thanks,

Robert

There should be heat shields. If they are gone, perhaps you can
fabricate your own. That would be quite easy. Some of my cars have
them, and some don't. The primary problem is the mounts becoming oil
soaked, particularly on the driver's side due to spillage while adding
oil. Leaky valve covers can also exacerbate this problem. For me,
having no heat shield makes it easier to spot and clean off any spilled
oil.

Once the mounts break, the engine will drop about 4 inches. If only one
breaks, the engine will drop on one side. This will be apparent from
looking at the position of the engine under the hood. There is an
accompanying vibration, and usually also added noise or rumble. If the
car is equipped with factory air, the fan blades will strike the lower
radiator shroud (been there-done that). If driven under these
circumstances, I suspect drive line damage could occur over time due to
the misalignment issue.

If yours are broken, installing new ones will noticeably increase the
silence and smoothness of your car.

Allright Paul,

I had a close look at mine yesterday evening, and they are both in bad
condition on my 60 Imp!
The central metal " ear " has not become fully loose yet, but I don't
think it won't last for another driving season.
Both rubbers are detoriated and cracked severely!
The reason might be that I don't see a heatshield!

Where there originally heathshields on the engine mounts in 1960 or did
they come in later years?
More important, if I want to use them are they still available on the
market today?

Thanks,

Robert

I paid a local Chrysler Dealer to do it back in the 1970's, and I think
they only charged me for an hour of labor. The second time it was done
at a transmission shop when they were working on something else. They
didn't charge me very much either. I had the mounts replaced in the '63
about five years ago by the same transmission shop during the
transmission servicing, and replacement of the drive shaft center
bearing insulator, which had also broken in that car.

Even though the mounts are the same, certain Imperials seem to have
more trouble with this than others. The mounts in my both of my 1960's
and the '62 are original and not broken, while those in the '63 were,
and those in the '65 have broken numerous times.

I have never changed any of them myself, so I can't share any tricks,
but I don't think it is difficult.

Hello Paul,

You are correct, at least the engine mounts for the 1960 model year are
" Floating Power".
How difficult are these mounts to replace on a 60 Imperial?
Any special equipment/tools involved here?

My original mounts are detoriated from heat and UV (Californian car)
and won't last that long anymore, lucky enough I was able
to find me a NOS set on Ebay at are very reasonable price last year.
So maybe this summer I will be challenged to replace my worn out engine
mounts for those NOS ones I have.

Any tips to share?

Thanks,

Robert

I don't own a '66, but 1960 through 1965 cars that I have all use the

The re-designed replacements are clearly distinguished in their sales descriptions. Read them carefully. I believe that they incorporate
