Re: IML: 62 Electroluminescent wiring question

I have not found a central connector, but rather various white wires of different lengths with red connectors which go as far as they need to reach each of the powered items. I think the multi-connector that is shown actually represents the transformer mounted on the inner firewall up under the dash. I don't think you will find a central connector. The shop manual explains the way the system is wired in series. If one lamp shorts out, the whole system shuts down. If one lamp opens up and doesn't light, only it will remain dark, allowing the others to light. The way to find a shorted lamp is to disconnected the individual lamps one a time until the good lamps in the system light up. I have been studying, working with, and repairing this lighting system since the early 1970's It really is kind of fun once you get the hang of it.

On your gauges, there is a voltage limiter built into the temperature gauge. It has likely burned out. It may have damaged the gauges if the points stuck closed sending 12 volts through the sensitive gauges for a long period of time. Usually they can still be made to work, but need to be recalibrating. J.C. Auto in Seattle can repair your cluster, but for a price, contact information on the OIC web site. You can test the operation of the each of the original gauges on the bench, using a 9 volt transistor radio battery to see if they will move when power is applied. The original voltage regulator will need to be bypassed, and there is a discussion about this on the OIC web site. Even if you can make it work, the design is precarious, and will fail again destroying all of your hard work.

You have embarked on a project with one of the most unique and interesting features of our cars, 1960 through 1963. There's lots of information out there to help you. The best source is the FSM, and the OIC web site.

Subject: IML: 62 Electroluminescent wiring question

Hope someone can help on this one, in the 62 shop manual on page 8 - 77, (the instrument panel wiring diagram), it shows all of the 8 white lighting wires with the 'E' prefix going to one point, is this some kind of

multi-connector or what, and does anyone know approximately where I'm likely to find it ?

Also while I'm here, only my ammeter is working, is it possible the CVR inside the temp gauge has gone open circuit, or is it likely to be something else like the 12 volt feed to the CVR ?

Appreciate all the help I can get on these problems.

Tony, Oz downunder.
