This sounds like a description of constant velocity joints - you need to replace with the same type if you want the car to be a smooth as it was when it was new. If you replace with plain joints, you need to very carefully adjust the angle of approach for the driveshaft so that there is no corner to be turned at either end of the driveshaft - of course this can only be done for one condition of payload. CV joints were used on luxury cars, plain joints were used on cars for the great unwashed.
