A/C compressor

Hi,

How hard is it to change the coil on an A/C compressor?  It's on my 1990.  I 
do not have a service manual.  Can it be done without disconnecting the hoses?

The clutch is not engaging.  When I hook the coil to the battery I don't hear 
it click.
