Check the wires that go to the brake switch, which is fluid activated and
connected to the master cylinder. When this happened to me, one of the
wires had slipped off and was making contact with the other one, completing
the circuit and therefore illuminating the bulbs. Disconnecting the battery
would have turned them off too, by the way.
Just at thought.
