Reverse Band/need new tranny now

I had my tranny re built last year, and the day of thanksgiving the reverse 
band brake.  now the mechanic says i need a new transmission!!?!

why cant that just be fixed?  diddnt know that would cause enough damage so 
its not repairable.

i missed the warrenty by 2 months!
