It won't hurt anything to charge the battery with it hooked up to the car,
unless you have worries about rodents or other damage to wiring which could
cause a fire. In our area, I never leave a battery hooked up in my storage
buildings - I just leave one terminal barely snug on each car, and lift off
one terminal whenever I am leaving the car for more than a day or two.
