Stainless roof inserts were offered between 1959 and 1963. They fit in the
space in front of the crown on the roof. The stainless panel were a catch-up
ploy to compete with the Cadillac. That marque had been offering a special
model called the Eldorado Brougham which had a stainless steel roof. For the
folks at Chrysler, giving the Imperial a stainless steel roof would have been
a tooling nightmare especially since the recession of 1958 had hurt sales
severely. The folks at Mopar used good old American ingenuity and crafted a
stainless steel panel over the sheet metal roof held in place with the
existing hardware for the crown and windshield trim. Voila! Instant stainless
steel roofs. Bye for now.
