Chiming in on this..I have a 383 2v (carter) and the once to the floor in cold weather seems to be the rule. Usually in the warmer weather with my car no pedal is required at all.

Ed, holding the gas pedal to the floor helps if the engine is flooded (let's
plenty of air in). From my experience with my 440's though, its tough to flood
a cold 440, even with operating choke.
