1974 IMP. /Towing problem Electrical

Hello Roger,
I would say that someone, in tapping into the light wires for the taillights must have tapped into the fuel gauge wire which would be grounded through the trailer lights and wouldcause that problem. Try testing the connections in the back of your car/truck with a test light to verify which are the correct wires for left, right, tail, and stop lights. And make sure you have a ground connection in your tow plug. Trailer hitches sometimes loose their ground due to grease and dirt accumulation.
