Thanks for the advice Phil,

having had the car idling for the last 1/2 hour I checked the vents for a sweet smell as you suggested. Yes it did smell sweet. I checked the pressure in the heater hose , one was hot the other bearly warm. This now supports your theory that the heater core is shot. Lucky that there is a radiator shop near to me that do's rebuilds. I think it might be prudent to get the main core re done too.Still after 40 years they ain't done bad !
