How true, Richard. In 1955 I was helping out a friend who owned a Sunoco station in my home town. He had the contract to prepare cars that came off the truck for a Chrysler/Imperial/Plymouth dealership.
We would wash them, put in the rubber mats (in the front of the Plymouths), install the wheel covers, remove the sheet plastic that covered the door panels in the Chryslers and Imperials and clean off a plastic coating the factory put on the stainless steel moldings and trim.
We found (Westley's) Bleche-White to work in taking off the coating. However, Chrysler came out with a new color the year before on the Belvedere, a salmon pink. I sprayed the whitewall cleaner happily away on a Plymouth and by the time I washed off the plastic coating, it had faded out (bleached) about 4 shades lighter. The service station owner had to pay for a new paint job. I found something else to use after that.
I was working for him for nothing (just helping out) so he didn't say anything to me but I ure learned a lesson working with cleaners.
One problem I notice with Westly's is that you don't want to get any of it on paint. I recently painted the rim, and if you don't get Westley's off fast it will stain the paint on the rim or even the car.

When using Westley's or any other whitewall cleaner, you need to use a whitewall brush made of (usually) brass wire bristles available in most auto supply stores. This will really clean them up and eliminates the black that steel wool pads can leave.
