By terms I would not call this a
"HOAX". A hoax is the crap about Mr Rogers being a decorated war veteran,
and Capt.. Kangaroo being a Korean war sniper, or the virus that someone
said they probably sent you, and to immediately forward the message to everybody
you know, because it cant be detected, and will ruin your computer when you
get it.
These "CROOKS" are very real.
I know of 2 people locally (Binghamton area, upstate NY) that have
actually fallen for this. One guy was selling a motorcycle on Ebay
and got a check for almost 50% more than he was asking. Being just before
the holidays and blinded by money the idiot took it to his bank and even they
said it was real international check. So he deposited the check and took
out $$ against it. His half smart wife, who had been telling him all along
it cant be true, about lost her mind when he told her he had come from the bank
and deposited the check and taken money against it. She and him went back
to the bank together and he put the money back and asked the bank to run the
check and see if it was valid. WELL, WALLA!, the next day the bank called
apologizing and shocked when they determined the bank it was drawn against did
not even exist! the local authorities were called and are working on this
popular new scam.
The other incident, nearly identical,
happened about 2 months before that incident, but the vehicle was a snowmobile,
and the kid didnt find out his fate until the sled was already gone. I
dont know him personally, but I know others who do know him, and he is in his
early twenties. I understand that he will never see his $5000 snowmobile,
or the $8000 he was given for it. Unfortunately for him, he had spent a
good portion of his money before the bank contacted him a week
later.
So, please dont consider this a HOAX as
much as consider it "SOMETHING TO BE CAUTIOUS OF". Just know that this
stuff does happen, and (just like HOAX)... it is a persons knowledge, that
stops it.
