It sounds like you may be approaching shops that are primarily focused on crash
repairs and not total paint jobs. There is a big difference.
Your Macco experience doesn't sound good. Based on what you said, I wouldn't
have them do the job either. In our area my feeling about them has been
positive, but I don't have unreasonable expectations about their work. Although
I have been very pleased with their work, I wouldn't recommend them for a "show
job". They simply have too much of an assembly line process to make that
possible. Now, if you could befriend one of their employees and have him offer
to do your car in their shop in his spare time you would have a good chance of
getting something special.
Keep looking, and try to get some references. Ask other people at cars shows in
your area where they have had their work done. Sometimes they will know of a
really good shop, or private individuals that do excellent work in their spare
time. Often, a good word and visual inspection from another customer is the
best way to pick a shop to do a special job on your Imperial.
