Jeff, I apologize for not getting to your question about the door handles
before I closed your note!
The interior door handles have a square spring clip on the inside, where the
handle pushes over the shaft sticking out the the door. The spring clip fits
into a slot or groove that goes all the way around the shaft. The spring clip
only uses one side of this groove.
Depending on which side of the car you are working on, you need to put a wedge
between the metal handle escutcheon and the handle where the handle connects to
the shaft, and push down on the clip from the top, or up on the clip from the
bottom of the handle to slide off the shaft. I can't remember which side of the
car goes which way, but I think that you will be able to figure it out. The
clip can be very tight.
One some cars the handle fits VERY close to the escutcheon, and it will be easy
to scratch the escutcheon. Be careful. If the screw driver or wedge slips, you
can jab yourself pretty badly,too. Again, be careful. There is actually a
special tool for this, but I don't know anyone who has one. It shows the tool
in the Factory Service Manual. I have a special screwdriver that "seems to work
every time", and I have kept it in my car all these years. I think it has a
transparent blue handle and came out of a child's Handy Andy Tool Box! The same
little screw driver has worked every time to install the brake shoe return
springs on my Center Plane Brake cars.
