It does have an ABS pump and that's probably what you hear. It's necessary
because the ABS operates at higher pressure than the "normal" brakes.
However, it's also a sign the pump is having trouble keeping pressure. The
pump is covered by a lifetime warranty, if its the Bendix one, but they
probably won't consider it a problem until the ABS and brake warning lights
are on.

Hi all,
When I'm driving my '90, about every third time I step
on the brake, I get a sound like a hydraulic motor
running for a few seconds. Is that some kind of brake
booster, or is my ABS pump running when it shouldn't?
I would expect that this car would have vacuum brakes
like most others, so it wouldn't need a motor running.
