Transmission fluid change

Hi all,

My '90 Imperial had an unfortunate incident a couple of weeks ago. The cooling
fan separated from
its hub and jammed in its shroud, causing the car to overheat. We managed to
get off the road,
but not before the car lost most of its coolant.

I'm replacing the blower motor and fan and refilling the coolant now. My
question concerns the
transmission. I know that the tranny cooler relies on the radiator, and I'm
concerned about the
health of the fluid. As far as I know, the fluid has never been changed. The
change interval is
supposed to be 80,000 miles, and I'm at about 96,000 miles. The fluid doesn't
smell burnt. Is it
safe to change my fluid and filter now, or have I passed the "too late to
change now, wait for a
rebuild" point? Since my home is 12 miles and 4,675 feet from the nearest flat
ground, the fluid
gets a workout with every trip.

Also, does anybody know of a Chrysler/Dodge dealer in Southern California that
can reflash the
tranny controller and is aware of that procedure? My local dealer has never
heard of it.

Thanks.

Tim
