Larry, this is a very common problem with these cars.  The problem is the
idle speed is so high that the driveshaft "clangs" into gear, especially
reverse.  If you are shifting into reverse too soon after you start the car,
this makes the problem worse, if it is an EFI car.  I think yours is a
converted car, so in your case, you can fiddle with the fast idle setting on
the choke linkage and perhaps get it to reduce a bit in impact to the
driveline.
